As the saying goes “practice makes perfect” and that was what 60 medical students from CUCMS and student members of PPIM India did on the 2nd of April 2010 when they joined forces to bring health awareness to the people of Kampung Kuala Teriang, Langkawi as practice to keeping part of the Modern Hippocratic Oath of Medicine.
“I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.
I will remember that I remain a member of society, with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sounds of mind and body as well as the infirm.”
Modern Hippocratic Oath of Medicine
The students were joined with their professors and educators in spreading the word of health to the villagers. Leading by examples the professors were as they tirelessly gave free medical consultations while the students carried out the medical screening.
Education needs to be enjoyable for it to be fully understood and absorbed, besides helping others they, the students, also helped themselves enrich their knowledge through the mangrove eco education tour they had a day prior to the program in Kampung Kuala Teriang.
Participants were given a chance to build further good networking with the villagers when the Penghulu invited them to stay with foster families for the remaining of their stay on the island. Adventure that was indeed as they got to know what living in the Kampung is like and helping them widen their horizons regarding the realities and the goings of the world and its people.
The trip has been quite the adventure and opportunity for the students to gain new friends, experiences and insights on their journey towards achieving greatness. Kudos and well done to the CUCMS PPIM student chapter committee who organised such a meaningful trip for the future leaders of tomorrow.
