Cyberjaya, 31 December. In a small but elegant event, 18 herbalists from HPA Group were conferred with certificates by Cyberjaya University College of Medical Sciences (CUCMS) upon their completion of Basic Medical Sciences Course for Traditional and Complementary Medicine (TCM), last Saturday.

The certificate giving ceremony was graced by CUCMS Managing Director, Dr Mohd Salmi Mohd Sohod and was witnessed by HPA Group of Companies Managing Director, Haji Ismail bin Haji Ahmad, and CUCMS’s Deputy President, Profesor Dr Shahharuddin Mohd.

Also present in the event were Dean of TCM, Director of Distance and Continuing Education Centre (DiCEC), HPA Group senior managers and regional representatives and CUCMS’s  head of departments and lecturers.

The course was organised by DiCEC and HPA Group targeting senior herbalists of HPA. The participants, many of whom with 10 to 20 years working experience, came as far as Singapore, Indonesia and Brunei to join their Malaysian course mates. The Certificates of Attendance were honoured to the students who had enrolled in a 20-day intensive course which took place from 11 to 30 December 2011.

The herbalists passed all the six modules which consisted General Human Anatomy, General Physiology, Biochemistry, General Pathology and Microbiology, Basic and Applied Nutrition, Environmental Health and Hygiene. Lectures and assessments were conducted by CUCMS’s academics.

The most interesting element of the event was that all students were also honoured with Herbalist Certificates by HPA’s Group Managing Director as they passed the Herbalist Certificate Course which was conducted simultaneously. The Herbalist Certificate training programme was conducted in the evenings whilst the Basic Medical Sciences were delivered during the day.

“We hope TCM Practitioners including the HPA herbalists will engage with us in various executive development programmes that DiCEC and CUCMS will be offering from time to time”, says Dr Salmi in his opening speech.

“We believe in the continuous education and are certainly confident that e-learning technology and distance education concepts will bring training and education in health care to everyone including those of working adults. I congratulate all herbalists for successfully completing the course despite being very busy with your career, customers and family commitment”, he further acknowledged the commitment of the participants.

In a very proactive note on the future collaborations with CUCMS, the HPA Group of Company Managing Director, Tuan Haji Ismail says, “I have once dreamed to launch a university of our own to spearhead higher education in the area of herbs. But with this such collaboration as we have seen today, I believe the engagement with CUCMS will bring us further in the sector of education and training”.

The Basic Medical Science Course for HPA herbalist was the first HPA in-house programme as CUCMS and HPA are expected to develop more joint ventures and collaborations in health care education and businesses that will benefit both parties.

The Best Student Overall Award went to Dr Syed Anwar Idid bin Syed Abdullah after which he also took away the Best Student awards in Modules of General Human Anatomy, General Physiology, General Pathology and Microbiology.

In the moment to cheer and celebration, the organiser brought live the nation’s no.1 nasyid singer Munif Hijaz, whose vocal and lyrics amused the audience.

Beside this group, another batch of Basic Medical Sciences students will be finishing their course by April 2012. This second cohort of students comprised of 32 TCM practioners from various modalities.
